Healthy School Roads
Children benefit from exercise. Together with municipalities and schools, we engage in dialogue with families with children about active, safe and healthy school transport. We focus on the family's everyday life and school transport, to find and overcome the barriers to walking and cycling on the way to school.
Project Healthy School Roads helps municipalities gain knowledge about families with children's transportation choices and methods that can be put into play to promote walking and cycling.
The project team are experts in research, involvement, traffic analysis and urban planning.
Why Healthy School Roads
Many children get too little exercise in their daily lives and the route to school can contribute to making children more active. Although Denmark is among the best countries in the world in the area of road safety and in many places has good conditions for cyclists and pedestrians, there is still potential for more active transport on the route to school.
There are many benefits to active transportation, especially for children. Good traffic habits are learned early, and children who transport themselves are more accustomed to traffic, ready to learn and healthier. In addition, active transportation helps reduce traffic density at schools and promotes traffic safety, while also contributing to society's green agenda.
To address this challenge and promote active and safe school transportation, we focus on families' transportation choices, the physical conditions around schools, and communication with children and parents. Our goal is to break down barriers and encourage more cycling and walking on the way to school.
Healthy School Roads studies
User surveys
Gain insight into the family's transportation habits, motives for choice and experiences. The surveys are aimed at children and/or parents, and map transportation habits, motives for transportation choice as well as drivers and barriers for active school transportation. We offer both short surveys that provide an overview and longer, in-depth surveys that provide insight. We make our combined experience and data available for consultation.
Physical screening of the school route
Road screening
Get an overview of the schools' conditions for safe cycling and walking. Through a new method that we have developed, we can carry out professional evaluations of schools and school roads, assessing the school's physical conditions for children's walking and cycling. Our method is systematic and cost-effective, which makes it possible to obtain a safety-related overview of all the municipality's schools, so that any efforts for children's safety can be prioritized. Healthy School Road Screening is delivered as a report with conclusions and recommendations.
Involvement and motivation
Healthy School Roads involvement and motivation
Boost your motivation for active school transport. There are many good reasons to cycle or walk to school: health, physical activity, mental well-being, environment and climate, independence and social skills. At the same time, there are also barriers, even at manageable distances, such as concerns about safety, busyness, bad weather, heavy luggage, fatigue and habits. Reducing barriers is therefore also about motivated families with children - where information, dialogue, arrangements, events and rewards can play a major role in promoting cycling and walking to school. We can help you with these efforts and provides, for example, systemic process consultants and traffic safety experts.

School Road Report 2022
In 2021/2022, with support from the GF Foundation, Sund Skolevej (Healthy School Roads) conducted a comprehensive analysis of 11,000 respondents' school transport in collaboration with 9 municipalities. The report came up with the following recommendations for promoting active school transport.
1. Security
The theme is about focusing on safety for road users. It is about dialogue with users and taking safety from a user perspective seriously. Basically, safety and user focus are about promoting well-being, welfare and health on the way to school. Safety and security can be, but do not have to be, opposites, as long as the solutions meet both requirements.
2. Road conditions
The theme is about school roads that prioritize light traffic and prioritize facilities that make active transportation comfortable, safe and fast. Passive transportation on school roads must be adjusted to the consideration of active transportation, even where it may be experienced as a loss of privileges for drivers on school roads.
3. Stimulation
The theme is about other things that can motivate healthy transport choices. Schools and parents, for example, have a shared responsibility to stimulate children's desire for active transport as early as possible. Stimulation is also about prioritizing and the practical things that can be done to facilitate, promote and reward active transport.
